Katie Austin on Pregnancy, Strength, and a Changing Perspective

Fitness personality Katie Austin is entering motherhood, and the experience is already reshaping her views on strength, success, and the body she has built her career around. The founder of KA Daily shares her journey through the first trimester, revealing a mix of empowerment, disorientation, and a newfound respect for the biological forces at play.

Discovering Motherhood

The decision to start a family wasn’t impulsive; Austin and her husband, Lane Armstrong, had discussed it for years. Yet, the actual moment of realization still surprised them. Austin recalls waking up on New Year’s Day with an overwhelming intuition, declaring herself pregnant before even taking a test. The confirmation was surreal, a feeling so intense they kept the news private for weeks. While they know the baby’s sex, they’re currently keeping that detail private.

Preparation and Unexpected Calm

The couple approached parenthood thoughtfully, undergoing fertility and genetic testing to ensure their health. This preparation, though reassuring, also amplified the magnitude of the decision. Austin had considered pregnancy for years, and the anticipation had become overwhelming. Ironically, getting pregnant brought a sense of calm. “There was this weird sense of relief… I thought, ‘okay, amazing. This is something that we thought about for so long.’”

A Changing Body, A New Respect

Austin’s career has centered on helping others understand and honor their bodies through movement. Pregnancy, however, offers a different perspective. She now feels a deeper respect for her body’s capabilities, even as it undergoes unpredictable changes. The fitness world often scrutinizes bodies for definition and performance, but pregnancy demands acceptance of a changing form.

Navigating Expectations and Discomfort

Early on, Austin faced a barrage of unsolicited opinions about how pregnancy should look, from timelines on when she’d start showing to generalized advice she hadn’t asked for. She stresses the importance of tuning into one’s own body awareness, as every person’s experience is unique. The changes came faster and more intensely than expected, leading to moments of empowerment alongside discomfort. “I think those two things can be true at the exact same time,” she admits.

The first trimester was particularly challenging, leaving her exhausted and nauseous. “It knocked me out like I never, ever thought it could,” Austin says. Some days, she barely recognized herself, questioning who this new body belonged to. However, learning about the baby’s development – the growth of fingers, hearing, and taste buds – filled her with a powerful sense of connection. “Knowing what is going on inside my body… is the most empowering thing I’ve ever heard.”

Letting Go of Control

For someone who thrives on structure, pregnancy has forced Austin to relinquish control. Her motivation for external validation, like social media engagement, evaporated. Strength, once defined by pushing limits, now takes on a softer meaning. Sometimes, strength is simply “showing up and just trying my best.”

A Family Legacy

Austin credits her parents, fitness icon Denise Austin and former pro tennis player Jeff Austin, for instilling a strong work ethic while prioritizing family. She remembers her mom leaving a TV show to focus on her children’s sports and how her parents were always present, regardless of their careers. This upbringing has shaped her commitment to being the best mother she can be, even if it means making sacrifices.

Looking Ahead

Austin is grateful for her husband’s unwavering support, joking that he’s been treating her like a child for the past three months. As she prepares to meet her baby, she feels overwhelmed with emotion. “First off, thank you for making me a mom… I’m so happy and thankful that you came into my life.” She hopes her child will always feel surrounded by love. Austin believes this is the perfect time in her life to become a mother, and she’s eager to embrace the journey.
