Grammy-winning artist Ciara has joined forces with pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences to promote Yeztugo, a new twice-yearly injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV. The collaboration centers around a remix of her 2004 hit “1, 2, Step,” now titled “1, 2, Prep,” designed to raise awareness about the drug and encourage wider adoption of HIV prevention methods.
The Challenge of HIV Prevention
Current PrEP options typically require daily pills or monthly injections. Yeztugo offers a simpler solution—a shot every six months—that could significantly improve adherence, especially for individuals who struggle with consistent medication routines. This is particularly critical because consistent PrEP use is essential for its effectiveness.
Why Ciara?
Ciara’s involvement goes beyond a simple endorsement. She has openly discussed her own past sexual health decisions, including abstaining before marriage, making her a relatable advocate for responsible behavior. The artist also recently participated in an HIV prevention panel at SXSW, signaling a deeper engagement with the issue.
“I’ve been very precious about that song, and I thought this was a brilliant idea to take it and use it in a way that could help save lives.” – Ciara
Disparities in HIV Infection Rates
The campaign aims to address stark inequalities in HIV infection rates. Black women, despite making up a smaller percentage of the population, account for the majority of new HIV diagnoses among women in the U.S. The Latino and LGBTQIA+ communities are also disproportionately affected. Ciara herself expressed surprise at these statistics, highlighting a critical gap in public awareness.
The Need for Normalizing Health Discussions
A core theme of the partnership is destigmatizing conversations around sexual health. Ciara emphasizes the importance of making wellness “cool” again, encouraging open dialogue about prevention and treatment. This approach aims to dismantle barriers that prevent people from seeking care or discussing their risks openly.
The campaign seeks to leverage music—a medium that resonates deeply with younger audiences—to spread awareness and encourage proactive health management. By partnering with a mainstream artist, Gilead hopes to reach communities that may be less engaged with traditional public health messaging.
Ultimately, the collaboration between Ciara and Gilead represents a novel strategy to combat HIV transmission: combining celebrity influence with a simplified, long-acting prevention method to drive broader adoption and reduce infection rates.
