Comfort First

Let’s be real. Traditional ballet flats are terrible. You know this. I know this. Walking a full mile in them feels like a punishment program for the toes. That is why I was suspicious at first. Skeptical, even. Then I found the On Running Margot.

I bought them in March. They have not left my feet since.

Usually, I reach for flats because I hate heels and sneakers are too clunky for what I have on. But old flats hurt. These don’t. They feel different. Why? Because of the engineering. There is a cushioned insole. A shock-absorbing heel. A roomy toe box that lets your foot actually breathe. And the strap. The Mary Jane strap keeps everything locked down so you don’t flop around while you walk.

Podiatrists actually approved these. The American Podiatric Medical Association gave them the Seal of Acceptance. That is a rare thing for a flat shoe.

I walked the dog for hours. I rushed around the city for afternoons on end. My feet were fine. No blisters. No sore heels.

It Looks Good, Too

Here is the tricky part. I am a style editor. I care about looks. If a shoe looks ugly, it stays on the shelf no matter how comfortable it is. The Margot looks great.

I bought the almond mesh color. It is surprisingly versatile. It goes with jeans. It goes with skirts. Even tailored trousers work. The square toe is modern. It feels slightly avant-garde but not ridiculous. The mesh texture adds some depth so it does not look like plain canvas. It works as a neutral.

Did I mention how breathable it is?

On warm days, the knit upper keeps air moving. No sweaty foot smell here. The shoes are also ridiculously light. You can toss them in a suitcase without taking up space. Most travel shoes are bulky bricks. These flatten out. They pack easily.

The Small Catch

One flaw? It is minor, but it exists. The removable insole has a habit of shifting. When you slip your foot in or out quickly, the sock might come out. It is annoying.

Honestly, do I care? No.

It is rare to find a shoe that looks this good and walks this well. Most shoes force a choice between aesthetics and comfort. This one offers both. I forgive the shifting insole for the sake of a blister-free day.
